There is now group purchase for travel packages – Gather your own group of family and friends to take advantage of travel discounts

You bought everything from bak kwa and banana cake to durians and otah rolls in group purchases. But have you ever purchased a travel package through a group purchase?

The group-buying phenomenon in Singapore, which has gained momentum during the pandemic, typically sees people living in the same area bundle and buy items in bulk from vendors. In return, they get discounts on bulk purchases and can even save on delivery costs. Although snacks, food, and even fresh ingredients are usually purchased through group purchases, it’s not uncommon to hear people banding together to buy electronics and furniture as well.

However, local electronic group buying platform Webuy has gone a step further by offering group buying for – wait for it – travel packages.

Touted as the first of their kind in Singapore, these group travel packages are allegedly cheaper “up to 30%”, Webuy told Travel packages can be purchased through the app or Webuy website, and customers can “buy travel packages at the cheapest rates and enjoy the convenience of a carefully planned itinerary with airfares, hotels , transportation, tours and meals included,” the press release states.

“Unlike typical travel agencies, Webuy doesn’t need to incur a lot of overhead. All communication can be done online, from the comfort of the consumer’s home. So these cost savings can then be passed on to them. “says a spokesperson for the company.

Currently, Webuy’s group buy travel packages are available for Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) destinations such as South Korea, Turkey, Switzerland, Italy, France, Australia and Vietnam.

Prices range from $1,788 for a 10D7N trip to Turkey to $3,999 for an 11D8N package to Switzerland, Italy and France. Plane tickets, hotels, meals, activities, Covid-19 tests (if necessary) and taxes included.

Webuy’s first group buying trip took place last December, when 15 people traveled to Switzerland.

There have been three group purchase trips so far – one to Switzerland and two to Turkey – with four more confirmed package travel deals to come.

There are a few things that set group travel packages apart from conventional tour groups.

While there are fixed routes, airlines and hotels for each trip set by Webuy, these can be customized to suit group travel preferences once a group reaches a minimum of 15-20 people . They can then choose their airline, their hotel and their favorite sites to visit. While the company is still negotiating to get group purchase rates for these changes, travelers will need to top up the price difference if it’s more expensive.

Customers can also form their own travel groups. However, they must touch a minimum number of 10 to 15 people in the group, depending on the destination, according to the company.

If customers are unable to form their own group, they can contact the travel group manager via in-app chat to help them form a group or add them to an existing group.

However, as with all group buys, there is some risk, for example if you do not reach the minimum number of orders to fulfill the group buy. In this case, if the minimum number of people cannot be met for a particular trip, the overall price of the trip package will be subject to change, explains Webuy.

If there are changes in the Covid-19 border restrictions, the trip will be postponed until the next available departure date, according to the company.
